What Time is It?

What time is it? We ask this question, either out loud or to ourselves, countless times a day. We may be concerned about missing a meeting or our favorite television show. We might be wondering how much longer before class ends or the bus arrives.  Whatever the case, we are concerned with time.

Saint Benedict was also concerned with time. In the Prologue of the Rule, he quotes the Letter to the Romans and says, “It is high time to arise from sleep” (Prol. 8).  He answers our question about what time it is with an urgent proclamation that the time is now! Whatever time it is, Benedict admonishes us that life is short and we don’t have time to waste…especially with Lent fast approaching.

What time is it?  It is time to ready ourselves for the season of Lent.

What time is it?  It is time to make new efforts to deepen our relationship with God.

What time is it?  It is time to be who and how God is calling us to be.

What time is it?  It is time to respond to all of those things that God has put upon our heart.

That’s what time it is!

“Listen carefully, my child, to your master's precepts, and incline the ear of your heart. Receive willingly and carry out effectively your loving father's advice, that by the labor of obedience you may return to Him from whom you had departed by the sloth of disobedience.”
–St. Benedict of Nursia, The Rule of Saint Benedict
