Loving

I wanted to scream!
I wanted to cry!
I wanted to lash out
At one whose words
Intended to break me!
I wanted to discredit her
In the eyes of all
And expose her hateful
Unattractive ways!!!
But in the moment
You saved me, God.
You re-opened my eyes
To her woundedness
Hidden in the darkness
Within her soul.
I do not know why
She suffers so,
What demons live there
Causing ugliness and hate.
Then I remembered
Jesus the Healer
Casting out demons,
Healing the sick,
Opening blind eyes,
Loving the unlovely…
Loving the unlovely…
Loving me even when I…
Loving me even when…
Loving me even…
Loving me…
Loving…
   always loving.
And despite my anger,
Despite my own pain,
My deepest desire
Was learning to love-
Learning to cast out demons,
To heal the sick,
To open blind eyes
By kindly speaking truth
And casting Light
That darkness cannot hide.
Come, Lord Jesus,
Make your home in me.

“Listen carefully, my child, to your master's precepts, and incline the ear of your heart. Receive willingly and carry out effectively your loving father's advice, that by the labor of obedience you may return to Him from whom you had departed by the sloth of disobedience.”
–St. Benedict of Nursia, The Rule of Saint Benedict
