Sister Ministry: Music

“Music is the language of the human spirit, bringing us together through God, the Great Orchestrator. We follow the command in the Rule of St. Benedict to ‘listen with the ear of your heart.’ It flows out of our spirit, teaching our spirits to listen to music, to each other, and to God.

“I play in our monastic liturgies, at Sunday services at Hope United Methodist Church, at St. Michael’s Church, and as an accompanist to voice lessons at the University of Minnesota in Duluth.  Shared music with others becomes a collaboration that brings disparate people into community in unexpected ways. After music my soul cries out, Thanks be to God!

Sister Gretchen Johnston

“Music, painting, sculpture, architecture are simply the beauty that unites us to grow in the faith which is celebrated in prophetic hope and in witnessed charity.”

Pope Francis
