Fare Thee Well, Marce

On Sunday evening, August 8th, the Community honored Marce Wood who was completing her volunteer time with us as a Benedictine Associate.  During her months as an Associate, Marce gave invaluable assistance in many ways to the Sisters, blessed us daily with a smile and greeting that shown and felt like sunrises, and, in addition, delighted us with her visual art.  At her farewell dinner, we learned that Marce is also an artist with words, writing over five-hundred “short poems” about her experience.  After our meal, she honored us by reading some of her most favorite ones.  Here is a sampling of her writing….

SLIGHT TURN INTO AUTUMN
a community of blackbirds hop about on gravel road discussing the shifting of colors the texture of light the new chilly air sweetly opening the next season

TOWARD TRUTH
turning my head so slightly I saw the opening

I HEARD SONG
in the dark of morning before the work of life one Sister alone in chapel sings, her heart a pleading cavern

MONDAY NIGHTFALL
whole heart joyful I am head high bounding down the long brown road

TENDER WAYS
I have seen God in so many people who are not certain

ON SABBATICAL I am contemplating the eyes that live in clouds

ETERNITY
imagine the eyes of Christ

“Our humanity comes to its fullest bloom in giving. We become beautiful people when we give whatever we can give: a smile, a handshake, a kiss, an embrace, a word of love, a present, a part of our life...all of our life.”
–Henri Nouwen
