I have never really appreciated the word content. Unless I was babysitting young children and hoping to keep them content and out of trouble, I never really used the word, much less applied it to myself. That was, until I noticed the word in Psalm 17. It is the last line in this Psalm that caught my attention. “But, in justice shall I behold your face…I shall be content in your presence” (Psalm 17:15).
Each and every morning I spend time before the Blessed Sacrament. Each day I say my prayers and I try to “just be” with my Lord. But do I feel content? Do I enjoy being content in God’s presence?
Contentment is a state of happiness and satisfaction. It is not boredom or resignation. Being content isn’t tied to our accomplishments or constantly getting more. Saint Paul tells us that the true meaning of contentment is being satisfied with what you have, with who you are and with what God is doing with you. Turns out it’s not just for sleeping babies and quiet toddlers!
So, take some time today, or pledge the you will take some time tomorrow, to find contentment with the Lord. Pick a quiet place and time to be with God. Recall all the wonderful things God has done for you and all the blessings you enjoy. And try to sense God’s presence. Let God’s love and peace wash over you. Pray that you can be content in the Lord.
“I have learned the secret of being content no matter what happens. I am content whether I am well fed or hungry. I am content whether I have more than enough or not enough. I can do everything by the power of Christ. He gives me strength.” (Philippians 4:12-13)
