Edith Stein (Teresa Benedicta of the Cross) was a philosopher, Jewish Christian, and Carmelite martyr, who died in Auschwitz in 1942. She consciously identified her sufferings with the Cross of Christ.
Oscar Romero was the Archbishop of San Salvador who denounced the persecution of priests and nuns who had worked on behalf of the poor. He was assassinated in 1980 while offering Mass. “If they kill me, I shall arise again in the Salvadoran people.”
