Compassionate God, in Jesus peace was bestowed for he said: “Peace I give you, peace I leave you.”
Shalom in Hebrew means not only peace, but health, wholeness, true prosperity, right social relationships, love of neighbor, and justice. May this shalom peace become a way of life; not a passive life but one of assertive, imaginative, systemic action that roots out injustices and brings reconciliation and the awareness that we are all brothers and sisters in the heart of God.
Give us patience, for our country will never be fully whole, totally united, but this must not deter us from embracing the vision of a ‘Jesus peace’ on which each new generation can build. Give us the grace to build upon Pope Paul VI’s phrase, “If you want peace, work for justice.” Show us how to start in our own communities, for peace begins with each one of us.
Teach us to delight in the diversity of cultures as you delight in the exuberant variations in your Creation.
Raise up leaders from among us with skills to bring about the Prophet Isaiah’s ‘peaceable kingdom’: communication skills, diplomatic skills, arbitration skills, understanding, and respect for differences.
In the name of Jesus, with the intercession of Mary, we pray that peace and civility, not hate nor any type of violence, will permeate our land today and in the days and months ahead. We pray through our Lord Jesus Christ your Son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, forever and ever. Amen.
May the peace of Christ reign in our hearts, city, country and world this day and always. In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
