Sister Lisa Maurer – I Saw the Bears

Of all days, I saw the bears on Recollection Sunday, a Sunday of prayer, reflection and silence! I saw the bears and I couldn’t tell anyone until after Evening Prayer!

Two Bears at the Base of the Tree

I have been here in Northern Minnesota for four years now and I have never seen a bear . . . except that time in the Lake Superior Zoo in Duluth. I have seen tracks and other evidence (if you know what I mean) of the bears that inhabit our glorious wooded land that is part of our beautiful property here at St. Scholastica.

But I have never seen a bear let alone the bears. I have seen countless deer, birds of all sorts and numerous four-footed creatures that scurry around. The bears, until this week, have eluded me. In my mind seeing a bear was akin to a UFO sighting….I want to see one!

That could be Mama bear!

That could be a Minnesota Mama Bear!

Well, I can tell you that seeing is believing. On a reflective walk through the woods, while I was praying and taking pictures, I saw a momma bear and three youngsters.

“Listen carefully, my child, to your master's precepts, and incline the ear of your heart. Receive willingly and carry out effectively your loving father's advice, that by the labor of obedience you may return to Him from whom you had departed by the sloth of disobedience.”
