On October 16, Kathryn Boo spoke to an overflow crowd at Mitchell Auditorium of her experiences in the Annawadi slum of Mumbai.

Ms. Boo is a Pulitzer Prize winning investigative journalist who takes time to understand a story’s complexities and contradictions, and then lets the individuals tell it. She spent three years in Mumbai, sharing the lives of people in a squatter settlement of tin-roofed shacks near the Mumbai airport. In the shadow of luxury hotels, the residents survive by recycling garbage discarded by the wealthy minority.

Their economy depends largely on the value of scrap metal. From this came her book, Behind the Beautiful Forevers:  Life, Death and Hope in a Mumbai Undercity, which won the National Book Award in 2012.

Katherine came to Duluth at the invitation of her aunt, Sister Mary Richard Boo of the Monastery of St. Scholastica, who taught at The College of St. Scholastica for many years.
