I think we all remember calling “do-over” when playing a game as a child. There was such power in calling a do-over and a bit of comfort in it, too. It gave you the freedom to try doing most anything. I am pretty sure do-overs are one of the best things about being a kid.
Having the opportunity to do something again or repeat it, especially when it did not turn out well the first time, is a powerful way to turn a negative situation into a positive one, or to quickly correct an interaction. One of the worst experiences is messing something up with the worry that we can never fix it or try again.
Sadly, so many of us become so hung up on our failures, sins, disappointments, and regrets that we may lose heart and even forget about God’s ability to restore us. Shame, disappointment, and fear often cloud our ability to see and trust in God’s mercy.
Good thing God is always ready to give us a “do-over.” He delights in mercy and new beginnings. That is why the Sacrament of Reconciliation is so important. When we confess our sins, perform penance for them, and receive absolution, we basically get a “do-over” from God.
Let us rejoice that our God is the God of the Do-Over!
