1 Samuel, chapter 4, describes battles between Israel and the Philistines. These battles show us the importance of calling upon the Lord and asking for help. Twice in a row, once with the Ark of the Covenant in their midst, Israel as soundly defeated. What was happening?
It seems that Israel forgot one thing – one very important thing – to ask God’s help. Oh, they did everything in their own power, everything right to prepare for battle, even getting the Ark. They never really called upon the Lord. Even having the Ark with them appeared more like a rabbit’s foot or lucky charm than a symbol of Israel’s reliance on the Lord’s help and strength.
How often do I do this? How often do I rely on myself? I might not directly say I got this Lord; I don’t need your help, but that is what my actions show. I often mindlessly attack whatever enemy, issue, or project before me on my own. Oh, surely, I use the gifts and talents that the Lord has given me and undoubtedly, I am looking to do good, but I forget to purposely, intentionally and firstly call upon the Lord.
Do I do this out of pride? Do I do this out of forgetfulness or mindless presumption that the Lord is automatically by my side? Do I do this out of some warped sense of false humility thinking my little issues are too insignificant to call upon the Lord? How silly can I be? I should always call upon the Lord! The Bible tells me so!
For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. Romans 10:13
The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth. Psalm 145:18
Call to me, and I will answer you. Jeremiah 33:3
Call on me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you. Psalm 50:15
Call upon the Lord!
