Here we are. Another Lent is approaching. How many Lenten seasons does this make for you? How many do you remember? I have been on this earth for over fifty years now. I am not saying that I was actively and purposefully aware of each of those Lents, but surely for many of them.
So, what are you doing this Lent? Thinking about what you are going to give up for Lent or what extra you are going to do is a good start. Worrying about what you will make for all of your meatless Fridays is also part of the preparation. But don’t forget the why and how behind the what. Why do you pray, fast, and almsgiving and how will it make a difference in your life?
Prayer during Lent helps us to focus on our need for God. Fasting or giving something up can be a reminder of Jesus’ sacrifice. Giving money or doing some good for others is a way to respond to God’s mercy and goodness.
As we get ready for Ash Wednesday and Lent 2022 let us pray with St. Ephrem for the grace we need to make this a holy season like none other.
Lenten Prayer
O Lord and Master of my life!
Take from me the spirit of laziness,
faint-heartedness, desire for power, and idle talk.
But give your servant
the spirit of chastity,
humility, patience, and love.
Yes, Lord and King!
Grant me to see my own errors
and not to unjustly or hastily judge others,
for you are blessed, now and forever. Amen.
