Sister Ministry: Catholic Health Care Mission Integration

Sister Joan Marie Stelman oversees Mission Integration for St. Mary Hospital in Duluth and in Superior, Wisconsin.

“Mission integration ensures that Catholic health care in Duluth continues to thrive and be Catholic.  I take my goal from the chapter on Humility of the Rule of St. Benedict: that every hospital employee will arrive at that perfect love of God and their neighbor, which will enable them to embody our values without having to think about it. What they once had to work at will be so natural to them that in all they do they will show the compassion of Christ to each person they encounter. This will not be a burden but rather will bring them joy.”

“People immersed in the mystery of suffering and pain, when they accept these in faith, can themselves become living witnesses of a faith capable of embracing suffering, even without being able to understand its full meaning.”

Pope Francis

“Our humanity comes to its fullest bloom in giving. We become beautiful people when we give whatever we can give: a smile, a handshake, a kiss, an embrace, a word of love, a present, a part of our life...all of our life.”
–Henri Nouwen
