Sister Mary Christa Kroening, 95, died peacefully at St. Scholastica Monastery, Duluth, on January 1, 2025, in her 70th year of monastic profession. She now rejoices with all the Saints and Angels in Heaven.

Born August 15, 1929, to Arthur and Lydia (Schmid) Kroening in Springfield, Minnesota, the first of six children, she was christened Virginia May. As soon as they were old enough, she and her siblings worked on the family farm and market. After high school she worked as bookkeeper, first for Springfield Milling Corporation and then at University of Minnesota.

In 1953 she entered St. Scholastica Priory as postulant, made her triennial vows in 1955 and perpetual vows in 1958, and celebrated her Diamond Jubilee in 2015. A passionate educator, she completed a Bachelor’s in Elementary Education at The College of St. Scholastica in 1962 and taught in Catholic elementary and junior high schools in Hibbing, Crosby, and Duluth until 1970. She was recognized as an Outstanding Educator for her innovative work in individualized education.

She then became Religious Education Coordinator for Sacred Heart Parish in Duluth, studied Clinical Pastoral Education, and completed a Master’s in Liturgical Studies at Saint John’s University in 1980. For sixteen years she was the Director of Liturgy for the Monastery, and was a founding member of the Monastic Liturgy Forum that provided continuing liturgical education and communal support for monastic liturgists. She assisted in the renovation of the monastic chapel and college library, was active in the Monastic Interreligious Dialogue Forum, and served on several boards.

In 1997 she was hired by the Benedictine Health System (now Benedictine Living Communities) as Director of Mission Integration and Liturgical Consultant. She designed or renovated 33 chapels at Benedictine care centers and strongly advocated for spiritual care as an integral part of medical care. She retired in 2014.

Within the Monastery, she played organ at liturgies, guided the formation of Sisters in triennial vows, and was a skilled gardener. Throughout her many decades of service, she was a shining example of authentic Benedictine life, serving God through her ministries to others.

Sister Mary Christa was preceded in death by her parents Arthur and Lydia Kroening and siblings Theodore Anton Kroening, John Arthur Kroening, Paul Edward Kroening, Audrey Ann Bambenek, and Patricia LaMay Cady. She is survived by many nephews and nieces and by the Sisters of St. Scholastica Monastery.

  1. Sister. Mary Cristy’s was a very special person. I am happy to have known her and lived with here .I learned a lot from her about individualizing education and used many of her methods in teaching. Thank you for streaming her funeral. Lois Kuschner Hewitt

  2. I spent Fall Semester 1972 in residence at Sacred Heart Convent with several other students as our campus housing in the Grove was not completed. Sr. Christa was our “house mother.” She was warm, engaging and a lot of fun! Sleep peacefully Sister.

  3. She was vibrant with a lot of energy. She was a wonderful liturgist directing and planning Masses and funerals. She was always organized and eager to help and to teach on certain things. She was easy to talk with. She was quite knowledgeable. She was a bright light living out her monastic life. God bless you, Sr. Mary Christa. May the perpetual light shine upon you and give you peace.

  4. Although I did not know Sr Mary Christa very well I always enjoyed talking and sharing while sitting next to her sharing a meal!! I Loved her Authenticity, her wearing of many hats literally and figuratively! Peace, Dear Sister

  5. Sister Mary Christa was a true friend in Christ. She taught me as a young boy how to follow Jesus with humility, compassion, love, and forgiveness. It was through her eyes that I first saw the face of Christ and wept. I am most grateful for our life-long friendship and the endless contributions Sister Mary Christa has made throughout her life.
    Called to Serve
Behold I Am in the midst of You As one who Serves
‘Come, you who are blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited Me in; naked, and you clothed Me; I was sick, and you visited Me; I was in prison, and you came to Me.’ Then the righteous will answer Him, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry, and feed You, or thirsty, and give You something to drink? And when did we see You as a stranger, and invite You in, or naked, and clothe You? And when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’ And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it for one of the least of these brothers or sisters of Mine, you did it for Me.’ – Matthew 25:34-40 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

“Our humanity comes to its fullest bloom in giving. We become beautiful people when we give whatever we can give: a smile, a handshake, a kiss, an embrace, a word of love, a present, a part of our life...all of our life.”
–Henri Nouwen
