Sister Lisa Maurer – We Don’t Go It Alone

Winter Highways
Winter Highways

It’s a good thing we don’t go it alone, be it a wintery highway or life…

Not too long ago I was traveling from Duluth to southern Minnesota on a snowy winter day.  My vision was obscured by large and numerous wind-driven snowflakes and my nerves were rattled by the slick and unsure, snow-packed highway.I believe a lot of  Hail Marys got me safely to my destination but there was another thing that helped me–the cars, ahead of me and behind me.  It was good to have someone’s tracks to follow, someone to lead the way helping me to avoid danger.  It was just as good to have someone behind me, someone to come to my aid should I get stuck or slide off the road.As I slowly chugged down the road happy to have pilgrims on my journey, I got to thinking that life is like traveling down a wintery highway.  For both, we need prayer and companions.  That is the great thing about monastic life.  I have so many good and holy people to follow, be it the Benedictine saints of old or the beautiful women in my community.  It is such a comfort and inspiration to know that I am among others who are “fighting the good fight” striving to live and love in the light of Christ. Yes, it is a good thing we don’t go it alone, be it a wintery highway or life…
