Prayer is a Good Thing

In her autobiography, St. Therese of Lisieux says that “prayer is a surge of the heart; it is a simple look turned toward heaven, it is a cry of recognition and of love, embracing both trial and joy.” What a beautiful expression of what is means to pray!

Prayer is a gift from God. God gives this gift of prayer to us because He loves us and wants to be in relationship with us. This gift of prayer enables us to fulfill the desire we all have, to be in a loving relationship with God. Prayer is the way we wrestle with the truth, as St. Augustine put it “that our hearts are restless until they rest in God.”

We are called to pray with devotion from our hearts. Prayer makes us humble as we come before God with a sincere acknowledgement of our weaknesses and unworthiness, while at the same time having confidence that God will hear our prayer. To truly pray means to have a holy resignation to the Will of God, trusting in God’s love for us and being detached from the outcome. We are called to pray with a lively and persevering faith.

Great gifts come from a life of prayer. We are united with God and strengthened against evil. Being a person of prayer makes us heavenly minded and gives us zeal and energy for good. When we are rooted in prayer, we can find comfort in adversity and obtain help in time of need.

Prayer is a good thing.

“Listen carefully, my child, to your master's precepts, and incline the ear of your heart. Receive willingly and carry out effectively your loving father's advice, that by the labor of obedience you may return to Him from whom you had departed by the sloth of disobedience.”
