St. Scholastica Monastery held an open house on Sunday, December 6, 2015 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. to allow all who were interested or curious to come see and learn what the Benedictine Sisters do and how they live. Many posters lined the hallways of the public areas of the Monastery which were replete with photos and information about the unique work each of the various departments from Transportation to Vocations, Liturgy to McCabe Renewal Center, Oblates to teachers. Many offices were open and more displays of those offices described the yearly work accomplished there. A variety of ways were used to communicate the life and business of consecrated life: television, videos, photos, text and books and pamplets, The most enjoyable way seemed to be simply talking with the Sisters themselves.
Rockhurst Dining Room offered refreshments and special “Chat with a Sister” areas where guests could talk with a Sister and ask their questions. The AV Display ran a succesion of videos created over the years which spotlighted individuals or projects, what the consecrated life has meant to Sisters, or how consecrated lives of this Community have made a difference to people and organizations.
A mini-concert was offered in the Sisters’ Community Room and organ selections were played in Our Lady Queen of Peace Chapel by two talented Sisters.
Sister-led tours of the Chapel were available as well as self-guided tours.
And Evening prayer at 3:30 p.m. in the Chapel brought the Open House to a conclusion and was in honor of the Year of Consecrated Life.
Many of the visitors to our Open House on December 6 were captivated by a series of videos highlighting our many ministries. Those 31 videos – ranging in length from just over a minute to nearly 12 minutes, about an hour of viewing in total – are preserved in the Monastery Open House 2015 YouTube playlist maintained by our Vocation Ministry Office.
