Thirty years ago, Lisa Askelson began her career at the Monastery working in the laundry. Over the years she took on more responsibility and became manager of Environmental Services. Three years ago, when Sister Martha Bechtold stepped down as Director of Temporalities (what St. Benedict called ‘the Cellarer’ in his Holy Rule), Lisa stepped into the role and became Director of Monastery Facilities.
Lisa epitomizes the soul of the Benedictine Cellarer. As St. Benedict writes in his Rule, a cellarer “is wise, of mature character, sober, not haughty, not excitable, not offensive, not slow, not wasteful, and God-fearing. … Above all things let her have humility; and if she has nothing else to give let her give a good word in answer for it is written, ‘A good word is above the best gift’ (Eccles. 18:17).”
Thank you, Lisa, for always being ready with your cheerful smile and eager attention to detail. We love having you here as part of our Community.
