Four-Square

I enjoyed playing Four-Square when I was a kid. It was one of my favorite games to play at recess. I think it was the simple straightforwardness and orderliness of the game that attracted me.

In the Gospel this past Sunday, Jesus had a message that reminded me of Four-square. It was simple and orderly. As He began his public ministry He said, “This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel” (Mark 1:15). Let’s check out the four squares of Jesus’ message.

1. The time is now.
It is time for us to understand that the Incarnation, Jesus coming as man, changed the world forever. The time is now for us to live lives that reflect this fact.

2. The kingdom is here.
When Jesus came, He brought about God’s new Kingdom of grace and mercy. Let us live lives that participate in that Kingdom.

3. Repent.
We have the extraordinary calling to change our sinful ways and live an unwavering and radical commitment to following Christ.

4. Believe in the gospel.
It is our duty to immerse ourselves in the message of the Gospel and to respond to it without reserve.
