Coming Undone

I carry a backpack most everywhere I go, be it a meeting, the adoration chapel, or football practice. In it I carry the many things I need throughout the day including a little pouch full of pens and pencils.

I noticed the other day that some of the pens had become undone. I have no idea how this happened. I can assume it was from all the jostling that happens when carrying a backpack and the wear and tear that happens from it being tossed here and there.

Does that ever happen to you? That you become undone in the daily happenings of life? Feeling overwhelmed by life and feeling undone can be caused by many things including:  having too much to handle, difficult relationships, sickness, sadness, stress, the ills of the world, worries, fears, disappointments, pain…  Oh, the list could go on and on.

When we feel like we are coming undone, let us remember the words of Jesus. “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves. For my yoke is easy, and my burden light” (Matthew 11:28-30).

“Listen carefully, my child, to your master's precepts, and incline the ear of your heart. Receive willingly and carry out effectively your loving father's advice, that by the labor of obedience you may return to Him from whom you had departed by the sloth of disobedience.”
–St. Benedict of Nursia, The Rule of Saint Benedict
