All-Weather Friend

It is easy to be a friend of Jesus when our days are full of sunshine, rainbows and butterfly kisses, but what happens when the rains come? It is never easy to endure sufferings and hard times but who wants to be known as a fair-weather friend of Jesus?

Our lives are a constant battle. We should never forget that. Nor should we lose heart. We can be tempted to give up, put our crosses down, and turn our backs on Jesus. But we know that is not the answer for “blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him” (James 1:12).

When Jesus said that “whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me” (Matthew 6:24), he was not saying that every day would be stormy. He was saying that we can’t expect to have a glorious eternity full of sunshine, rainbows and butterfly kisses if we don’t endure some storms.

So, today, make a commitment to be an all-weather friend of Jesus. Even when the rains come, still follow Him. Even if the winds are too strong and your cross is too heavy, don’t leave Him. He will never leave you. No matter what you are going through, Jesus is your All-Weather Friend.

“Listen carefully, my child, to your master's precepts, and incline the ear of your heart. Receive willingly and carry out effectively your loving father's advice, that by the labor of obedience you may return to Him from whom you had departed by the sloth of disobedience.”
