Ash Wednesday

February 17, 2021

Today marks the beginning of Lent and is a solemn day of fasting and penitence. Pope Benedict XVI said, “Lent is a journey. It means accompanying Jesus as he travels to Jerusalem, the place where the mystery of his passion, death, and resurrection is to be fulfilled. It reminds us that Christian life is a ‘road’ to be traveled, consisting not so much in a law to be observed as in the person of Christ himself, who must be encountered, welcomed, and followed.”

“Listen carefully, my child, to your master's precepts, and incline the ear of your heart. Receive willingly and carry out effectively your loving father's advice, that by the labor of obedience you may return to Him from whom you had departed by the sloth of disobedience.”
–St. Benedict of Nursia, The Rule of Saint Benedict
