Pray for Vocations

We are all called to pray for vocations. It is the work of all the faithful to help build up those called to special service within the Church. Jesus told us to “pray the Lord of the harvest to send laborers into his harvest” (Matthew 9:38).

While appreciating all vocations, there is a special need to concentrate and give prayerful attention vocations to the ordained ministries (priesthood and diaconate), consecrated life in all its forms (male and female religious life, societies of apostolic life, consecrated virginity), secular institutes in their diversity of services and membership, and to the missionary life. We need people of vision and imagination who selflessly go forward in humble service. Let us pray that God’s Spirit will inspire young people to join religious life and priesthood.

It is through the power of prayer that those seeking the priesthood and consecrated life are sustained and nurtured. Even though you may not personally know anyone who is in discernment about a vocation, you can, in your mind’s eye, imagine such a man or a woman. By praying for this anonymous person, you can be of special support to them though they may know nothing about it. But, trust that God knows. By the grace of these prayers, you can partake in the work of building the Kingdom!

Gracious God, You show your favor to us through the many gifts you give to us. You sent Jesus, your beloved Son, as your servant of justice in our world. Open our minds and hearts to hear your call to us today. Guide women and men to use their gifts to serve the Church and continue the mission of Jesus. We offer this prayer through Christ and the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen. (NCCV)
