When Isaiah says “Father, we are the clay; you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand” (67:4) he means it. God is always “working” on us. And sometimes it doesn’t feel good. As God is working on us and molding us into who and how He dreams us to be, it is as if we can feel every pinch, poke and prod, every whirling spin on the potter’s wheel and every flickering flame in the kiln.
Yes, it may seem that God our Father is tough on us, especially when we experience loneliness, face trials, have disappointments or are challenged. In these times we might, like St. Teresa of Avila, think “If this is how you treat your friends, no wonder you have so few.” But we can let the words of St. Paul remind us that God is on our side and that He is always doing what is best for us. “We know that all things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28).
Father, help me to trust that you are molding me into who and how you dream me to be!
