Keeping Faith

Sitting by a Minnesota lake in May has much more appeal when the lake is not still frozen.  It is my deep hope that by the time you read this, spring has actually appeared in Northern Minnesota . . .

April 1st would have been my father’s 71st birthday.  It was also Emmaus Monday, the Monday in the Octave of Easter.  I went to Kitchi Gammi Park (otherwise known as Brighton Beach, but don’t you think Kitchi Gammi Park is much more quaint?) in Duluth to spend some time by Lake Superior.  My father looked at the world with the eyes of wonder, especially . . .

Back in October ††Pope Benedict had declared the Year of Faith and I had declared that one of the ways I was going to observe this holy year would be by reading some of the spiritual classics and the writings of the Church Fathers.  I began by reading . . .

As a deer longs for flowing streams,
so my soul longs for you, O God.
My soul thirsts for God,

for the living God.
When shall I come and behold
the face of God?

The liturgy for Sunday presents us with the theme of a recurring problem in all our lives, that is, coming to terms with our true identity. In the first reading . . .

On February 2, the Church observes the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord commemorating the day on which the child Jesus was brought to the temple to be consecrated to God. Because the true light has now come into the world, the commemoration includes the blessing of candles used in liturgical . . .

BLACK SHEEP AND CHRISTMAS

by admin on January 7, 2013

I am reminded of a Christmas card we received one year. It depicted several white lambs which were in sharp contrast to the deep dark bluish green background. Last week we heard from Jeremiah that God’s Promise would be fulfilled. The Advent journey for the Jews and for us continues as we live and walk in the light of that Promise.
But on this Second Sunday of Advent, they (and maybe we) seem to be far from that Promise. They have lost . . .

The new Christians of Thessalonica, to whom Paul writes in the second reading, struggled with perseverance in the face of continuing harassment by those who misunderstood and misjudged them.  Paul encouraged the Thessalonians and us to persevere and to see the signs of hope and encouragement inside and around . . .

Sister Lisa Maurer – The Year of Faith

by admin on October 11, 2012

Pope Benedict the XVI has declared October 11 2012 through November 24, 2012 the Year of Faith. Fittingly, the Year of Faith begins on the fiftieth anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council. And, I find it interesting that October 11 also marks the twentieth anniversary of the publication of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. . . .

Sister Lisa Maurer – Look to Mary

Have you ever had a time when things just didn’t turn out right?  Maybe you hoped to go golfing with your friends and it did nothing but rain. Maybe your efforts to rebuild a relationship are met with distain.  Maybe your faith life seems  . . .
