River of Love
The Steelhead season began in early April. If you like to fly fish, like I do, the place to be is the Brule River in Wisconsin. Soon, up the Shore will be good, too – but the ice hasn’t gone out yet. Usually, I wait until the first crowds go home after the opening of Steelhead Season, because I like to fish in the quiet — standing in the river and feeling the force of the water around my legs – the birds chirping in the trees – the sun glistening on the water. Here is a wonderful mantra to carry in your heart: “The river of love is flowing; we are in it.”
I believe that faith might be just that ability to trust the river – to trust the flow and the Lover. It’s a process we don’t have to change, coerce or improve. We need to allow it to flow. That takes immense confidence in God – especially if we’re hurting.
If the water in the river is flowing strongly, sometimes I can feel a subtle panic inside me. What if I fall and my waders fill up? I usually don’t go too deep – because I don’t take huge risks when it comes to water. Water can be life-giving – but it can also be deadly. When I get those feelings of panic – and now I’m thinking about life in general more than fishing – I want to make things right – quickly. I lose my ability to be present and go up into my head and start obsessing. I’m into goal-orientation – trying to push or even create the river – the river that is already flowing through me.
The people who know God well – the mystics, the ancient abba’s and amma’s, those who risk everything to find God – always meet a Lover, not a dictator. God is never found to be an abusive father or a tyrannical mother – but a Lover who is more than we dared hope for.
Meister Eckhart once said, “God is like a great underground river that no one can dam up and no one can stop.” The river of love is flowing; we are in it.
Honor your journey – the journey that leads us from life to death and back into life again. Here is a blessing to aid you on your journey. May they be holy words that strengthen your soul – words that create life within and around you.
A Blessing for the Journey into Self
May the Wind of God drive away impurity
and bring fresh and vigorous possibility to your soul.
May the freeing Spirit unbind those places within
held captive by hopelessness, anxious thoughts and internal discord.
And may you find a middle place of awareness,
between the blowing and the stillness,
to feel and watch the movement from old to new.
Blessings on your faith journey. May you find life, death to what needs to die, and new life bursting out again.
