Message From the Director

Dear friends of McCabe Renewal Center,
When I give guest tours here at the Center I often mention that this home was built in 1914 and has had “many lives” beginning as a family home built by the McCabes and then turning into a gift given to the Benedictine Sisters of St. Scholastica Monastery by the McCabe family. Since 1940 the sisters have used this home to offer shelter and loving care for the elderly, a home away from home for young girls attending Stanbrook Hall High School, and then a home for students from the College of St. Scholastica.
The past thirty five years this beautiful home has been a place of healing, rest, renewal, and growth for women, men, and children from all walks of life. If these walls could talk they would have wonderful stories to share. God has been here from the very beginning offering hospitality, peace, healing, and joy. And so we continue to grow with the support of your prayers, donations, volunteering, and participation in our programs. Thank you!
Sr. Dorene King, OSB, joined our staff in September as Assistant Director and brings many gifts of pastoral ministry, creativity, music, and humor along with a compassionate heart. She has been a member of St. Scholastica Monastery since 2007 and is happy to be working here and ministering to those who come to the Center. Sr. Dorene and I will be facilitating the Womens’ Retreat in March.
Our newsletter offers you many opportunities for growth in prayer, reflection, learning, and group sharing, as well as spiritual direction. In addition to group events, we also welcome guests to come for a personal day of prayer; a time to nourish your soul while giving rest to your body. Just call to reserve a date. If you are looking for a unique gift for someone you love you might want to consider giving them a gift certificate for a retreat, workshop, class, or day of prayer.
May the light of God’s love carry you through the darkness of winter to the new life of spring, and may the peace of Christ, which surpasses all understanding, sustain you always.
Lovingly and gratefully yours,
Sister Jean Maher

| Listening to Winter I am listening to the quiet life in winter’s womb. I am listening to winter, nurturing spring. I am listening to brilliant winter sunsets and lovely frosty mornings. I am listening to snowflakes flying through the air, to the cold winds that often blow out there, to bare trees, so lovely in their emptiness, to one leaf that never did let go. I am listening. I am listening to winter —Macrina Wiederkehr |
